A Glimpse Into Carillon Miami's History: From MIMO Architecture To A Premier Wellness Destination

1958 Beginnings: The Birth Of Carillon Miami And MIMO Style

Carillon Miami first opened its doors in 1958, a creation of the visionary architect Norman Giller, who helped shape Miami Modern Architecture. This architectural style emerged in the post-World War II era and is characterized by sleek lines, bold geometric shapes, and a playful use of color, materials, and glass. The resort was initially founded by real estate pioneers Doris and Alfred Kaskel, who named it “Carillon” after their niece, Carol. This family connection gave the property a personal touch, setting the stage for the welcoming and glamorous destination it would become.

A Center Of Glamor And Impact: Carillon In The 1950s

In its early years, Carillon became a lively hotspot in Miami’s thriving social scene, welcoming celebrities, socialites, and influential figures. The Club Carillon was a particular highlight, where legendary performers like Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack lit up the stage, captivating audiences and filling the hotel with vibrant energy. Amidst the glamor and entertainment, Carillon also became a gathering place for thought leaders of the time. During this era, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave a speech on Carillon’s grounds, addressing the American Jewish Congress in May 1958. His powerful words resonated through Carillon, inspiring change and unity at a pivotal moment in history.

Original Design Elements That Honor The Resort's Legacy

As a testament to its storied past, the resort still honors its heritage today through several carefully preserved elements. The original Carillon sign, a hallmark of mid-century modern design, greets visitors with its sleek elegance. Inside, the terrazzo floors, a defining feature of the resort’s early design, continue to impress with their polished beauty and timeless appeal. The floors, crafted from a blend of marble, quartz, and glass chips set in cement, embody both strength and style—a reflection of the resort’s enduring presence in Miami’s architectural landscape.

In the same spirit, the original white panels—once part of the resort’s staircase— were carefully restored and now proudly reside above the guest services desk as well as in the porte cochere, adding a nostalgic touch and reinforcing the architectural legacy that defined the resort’s early years.

In addition to these historic elements, collectors’ items displayed in glass cases within The Strand restaurant offer guests a deeper look into Carillon’s past. Here, visitors can view silverware from the original era, vintage menus, photographs, and postcards, preserving moments from the resort’s golden age. These artifacts allow guests to connect with the legacy of the property while experiencing its modern transformation.

The Resort's Evolution Into A 70,000 SQFT Wellness Sanctuary

Though Carillon closed its doors in the late 1980s, it was revitalized in 1998 with a redevelopment plan that restored the original building and added two new towers. In 2015, the property was rebranded and infused with a renewed focus on wellness and luxury while restoring the iconic Carillon brand as we know it today.

The legacy of this storied past continues to influence Carillon Miami today. The resort blends its rich history with being one of the largest spa and wellness facilities on the Eastern Seaboard—spanning 70,000 square feet. A true wellness sanctuary, Carillon offers state-of-the-art amenities and transformative experiences designed to rejuvenate the mind, body, and spirit. The resort beautifully intertwines historic charm with modern luxury, honoring the past while embracing the future. It’s where Miami’s glamour, culture, and innovation converge, delivering an unforgettable experience for all who visit.
