What is Traditional Chinese Medicine and some of its benefits?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a complete medical system that has been around for thousands of years. By complete medical system, I mean that it includes multiple modalities such as acupuncture, herbal medicine, cupping, gua sha, sound bowl healing, among others that all work in harmony to balance the body and mind.

Traditional Chinese Medicine has countless benefits, but the biggest is that it helps to maintain the body’s optimal balance, allowing the body to heal itself faster and better. TCM is versatile and can also be used in conjunction with Western pharmaceutical medicine, in order to amplify overall healing.

One of the most common modalities - Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient practice that dates back to China approximately 3000 years ago. By 100 BCE, the Qi (vital energy or life force) flow channels were well established, and the information likely stemmed from a compilation of traditions passed down over centuries. Gradually, the practice of acupuncture was honed and insertion points became more specified, until it became a standard practice in China alongside massage, diet, and herbs. It involves a skilled practitioner inserting very fine needles at strategic points the body’s meridians (pathways) that help to balance the energy and life force known as Qi that flows through the meridians. When the Qi is stuck or stagnant this is when illness can occur.

Acupuncture can effectively treat a number of issues including cardiovascular, digestive endocrine, immune, muscular, renal productive, respiratory and skeletal systems.

Typically, the effects of acupuncture last a couple of days after the treatment. For this reason, I recommend doing a series of treatments between 3 and 10 sessions, so that the body can respond quicker and the effects can last longer.

How is acupuncture used for facial rejuvenation?

According to TCM, a person’s physical appearance is a direct manifestation of his or her internal organs’ functions. Acupuncture can be used on the face to stimulate organ-connected points on the body as well as individually selected points on the face, to ensure long-term treatment results. Additionally facial acupuncture can be used for cosmetic purposes. It is a wonderful alternative to cosmetic facial injections. Cosmetic acupuncture helps to increase blood flow, increase collagen production, release tension in facial muscles and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

What do you recommend for patients post-treatment? Is there anything or any activity that one should avoid after a session?

With the exception of taking a mud bath or swimming in a pond with many microorganisms, there are no limitations to what you can do immediately after an acupuncture treatment.

Are there any possible risks of acupuncture?

Acupuncture needles are extremely thin and are typically inserted into points right below the skin, and its risks are rare and minimal. Bruises are the most common side effects, but even they occur rarely.

Treating Common Health Issues

When it comes to caring for women, what are some of the most common women’s health issues you treat?

Many female patients come to me looking for treatment for stress, hormonal imbalances, endocrine issues like thyroid, and infertility. TCM’s modalities provide a safe and effective way to help heal the body from ailments.

How can men benefit from Traditional Chinese Medicine sessions?

While hormonal issues are more commonly associated with women, many men, especially as they age, begin to experience hormonal shifts. I see this a lot in my male patients. I also treat a lot of men who have muscular pain and stress.

Can Traditional Chinese Medicine help athletes?

Traditional Chinese Medicine modalities like acupuncture, cupping, gua sha, tui na, and others are very effective for treatment of muscle spasm and muscle soreness. Acupuncture’s capability to reduce inflammation is one of the best-researched benefits.

What kinds of herbs are used for healing in Traditional Chinese Medicine?

There are hundreds of herbs used for their healing properties in TCM including food, spices, leaves, stems, roots, and flowers of all kinds of herbs, even a few toxic ones. What I feel makes Chinese herbal medicine particularly interesting, is that there are herbal combinations that reduce individual herbs’ toxic or unwanted qualities and in turn can increase their needed healing properties.
